The 2026 TOEFL iBT Format: Everything You Need to Know
Starting January 21, 2026, the TOEFL iBT underwent its most significant update in decades. ETS modernized the exam to make it shorter, fully adaptive, and better aligned with real-world academic language use. Whether you are aiming for undergraduate admission or a competitive graduate program, here is what you will experience during the new 90-minute test at our authorized Dubai center:
- Shorter, Seamless Duration: The test has been compressed from roughly two hours down to just 90 minutes, running completely back-to-back with no scheduled breaks.
- Adaptive Difficulty: The Reading and Listening sections now feature multistage adaptive testing. Your performance in the first module directly determines the difficulty level of the second.
- Redesigned Speaking Section: Long, prepared academic speeches have been removed. You will now be evaluated on spontaneous verbal recall and conversational fluency, with zero preparation time given before you are required to speak.
- Faster Results: Official scores are now delivered to test-takers within 72 hours.
Understanding the New 1.0 to 6.0 Scoring Scale
The traditional 0–120 score has been replaced by a simplified 1.0 to 6.0 band scale (in 0.5 increments) that aligns directly with the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference). Each of the four sections receives a score from 1.0 to 6.0, and your overall score is the average of those four, rounded to the nearest half-band.
- 6.0 (C2 Mastery): Equivalent to the old 107–120.
- 5.0 or 5.5 (C1 Advanced): Equivalent to the old 95–106 (the standard for highly competitive programs).
- 4.0 or 4.5 (B2 Upper Intermediate): Equivalent to the old 72–94 (satisfies most standard university admissions).
- (Note on the 2026–2028 Transition Phase: Do not panic if universities still request a "100 on the TOEFL." Through January 2028, ETS issues score reports showing both your new 1.0–6.0 band and your comparable 0–120 score to help university admissions teams adjust).*
- Undergraduate and postgraduate university applicants worldwide
- Candidates seeking admission to academic programs requiring CEFR B2, C1, or C2 English proficiency
- Professionals applying for international licenses, medical boards, or certifications
